World Oceans Day Clean Up

* World Oceans Day *
From time to time we mention in our posts about doing clean ups. Especially on World Oceans Day, we should recognize the importance of the oceans to our planet. Not only is keeping the ocean clean important to the life under the waves, but to us who live above it as well. This is only one reason why we at B&J regulary do clean up events.

This afternoon we cleaned up at our ABC beach and after just a short time, we gathered lots of rubbish together. The main culprit of the day being cigarette butts and plastic. The most random item to wash on our shore was a motorcycle helmet!

On this day and on every day, we hope you'll be AWARE and, of course, happy bubbles!

World Oceans Day Cleanup and Educational Party at Habitat Island - FREE

Love your beach and keep it safe! We're having a cleanup at Habitat Island, and will be joined by several amazing organizations. Our educational party will consist of Fraser Riverkeeper, City of Vancouver, Sea Smart, SPEC, and 4Oceans, who will be discussing environmental topics and climate change. Thank you City of Vancouver for providing our volunteers with food and drinks for this event!

Did you know that the majority of waste found on Vancouver beaches is left behind by local beach goers? Cigarette butts, needles, styrofoam take out containers and Starbucks cups are constantly being left behind creating safety hazards and destroying our environment.

Your beach needs your help! Our goal is to clean every major Vancouver beach in 2017. You can join the Surfrider Vancouver team by signing up for this cleanup. Bonus points if you invite a friend to come!

We will be cleaning the island and along the shoreline from Science World to Cambie St Bridge. Come dressed for the weather and join us as we clean the shoreline, island, park and seawall.

After cleanup social is at 1pm, location TBA.

Beach cleanups are a fun and easy way to get involved and keep your beaches and oceans clean. Help keep our beach cleanups totally zero waste -- don’t forget to bring your work gloves and a reusable mug to our events!

Help us protect where you play!

Safety First: For safety reasons please bring gloves and closed toed shoes. Always use a stick or trash picker to sift through the sand to avoid sharp objects. If you come across any sharp or hazardous object, mark it and tell us, our team can handle the safe removal.

World Oceans Day Clean-Up in Black Sea Coast

To make an awareness in the Turkish public and spread the idea of proctecting our environment, we plan to do a clean-up in the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Having many visitors every season especially in summer, Yilgin Beach is a hot spot for both locals and tourists visiting the city, Giresun. On June 8, 2017 we will have a beach clean up for everyone in the area, hopefully making the beach cleaner and informing everyone that what they throw to the sea, comes back to them where they swim.

World Oceans Day Event

The Dumfries and Galloway World Oceans Day event is being held on Rockcliffe Beach on Sunday 11 June between 12 noon and 4.00pm.  Activities will be run by partner organisations such as Marine Conservation Society, Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network and RSPB.

The World Oceans Day theme this year is Our Oceans, Our Future, focusing on the problem of plastic pollution and marine litter on sea life including the elusive mermaid. It is shocking to think that 8 million tons of plastic enter our ocean each year and plastics are now getting into our food chain.

Visitors to the Rockcliffe event can also learn more about Solway Coastwise, a project that is discovering coastal place names and the stories behind them.  The project is encouraging local people to share their own knowledge and stories about the amazing Dumfries and Galloway coastline.

Activities are free of charge and include making a seashore finds box and a mermaid sand sculpture competitition, so come along with all the family

World Oceans Day Film Screening - SONIC SEA

Thursday, June 8th is World Oceans Day, and to mark the occasion, Save our Seas and Shores PEI and the Holland College Green Machine will present SONIC SEA, the award-winning documentary film about the devastating impact of human-produced ocean noise on whales and other marine life.

SONIC SEA travels beneath the ocean's surface to uncover the damaging consequences of increased ocean noise pollution and what can be done to stop it. Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actress Rachel McAdams and featuring interviews with marine ecologists, ocean life experts, and wildlife activists, including Grammy-Award winning musician, human rights and environmental activist Sting, SONIC SEA highlights how noise from a range of human-made sources has affected whales in recent years, including the mass stranding of whales around the planet. The film uncovers how better ship design, speed limits for large ships, quieter methods for underwater resource exploration, and exclusion zones for sonar training can work to reduce the noise in our oceans and stop the deaths of our ocean's beloved creatures, as long as society has the political will to solve it.

The film will be shown in Room 21C at Holland College, main campus, starting at 7 p.m.  Thursday June 8, 2017

Immediately following the screening, Dr Lindy Weilgart will be available to comment and answer questions. Lindy is an Adjunct Research Associate at Dalhousie University, and specialist in the effects of underwater noise pollution on cetaceans. She has served as invited noise expert for DFO Canada, U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, International Whaling Commission, NATO, European Parliament, Convention on Biodiversity, and the United Nations, and has published numerous peer-reviewed papers. She currently serves as Scientific Advisor for the International Ocean Noise Coalition.
