Every June 8th, World Oceans Day is celebrated. Martín Soto Jiménez, who is a specialist at the UNAM Institute of Marine and Limnology (ICMyL), Mazatlán academic unit in Mexico recalls that life on Earth began in the water, and the contamination of the seas affects us as a species, Since half of the productive activity, as well as the sustainability of the survival, depend on those ecosystems and their conservation.

He emphasized that due to the carelessness and irresponsibility of the people, hundreds of solid wastes, mainly plastics, arrive (through rivers or abandonment on the beaches) to these bodies of water.

Once in the oceans, they drift until they are caught by a current that takes them to one of the points where the currents stop and the waters calm down, known as oceanic turns, particularly the North Pacific turn.

In that place they begin to accumulate every day; "The problem is that if plastics take decades or centuries to degrade and more arrive daily, then those islands will become bigger. Now we estimate that they are the size of states like Chihuahua or Coahuila, but in the future they could have that of a continent, "he warned.

Happy World Oceans Day, from CYEN!

Did you know that oceans represent 97% of the Earth's water and they cover 71% of the Earth's surface? They also provide homes for millions of marine species.

The loss of these marine species is profoundly weakening the oceans' ecosystems and their ability to withstand disturbances (such as climate change) and sustain life.

"CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE"
- SHORE BASED FISHING BETWEEN THE TWO MPA'S IN PLETT

The Nature’s Valley Trust has worked closely with recreational fisherman in recent years, collecting valuable data on the status of fishing in our bay. By comparing their results from 2015 to those from an earlier study in 2003, they have been able to assess changes in catch per unit effort, and size of fish caught. The presentation will go through these interesting results, discuss possible causes for the change, and showcase the efforts they are putting in to work more with recreational fisherman to try address some of the issues raised.

Venue - The Fat Fish

Date - 8 June 2017

Time - 12:30 - 14:00
