Àros na Mara World Oceans Day Festival

June 7-10, 2018 – The Port of Iona and the Barra Strait, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada  - overlooking the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake, comes alive with festivities acknowledging World Oceans Day. This is our 4th year acknowledging and celebrating this world wide UNESCO designated event.  World Ocean Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 10th .   We are pleased our Festival has been chosen by Destination Cape Breton as one to attend in 2018!  Join us for some festivities, fun and food while enjoying and learning about the Bras d’Or Lake.    Theme: Prevent Plastic Pollution and Encourage Solutions for a Healthy Ocean.

 Sunday, June 10th – World Oceans Day – Iona Port – - day begins with: 9-12 – Think Tank Breakfast – (limited number - reservations only) Grand Narrows – Theme: Beauty, Science  and Eco-tourism at the Barra Strait. 12-4: 12pm official opening of World Oceans Day, Iona Port, Àros na Mara The Great Trail Centre–  day continues until 4pm including: demonstrations, displays, childrens activities, food,  music,  and afternoon speaker program panel session.  Please check:  arosnamara.com for further updates.

 

Schedule  of Events -June 7, Thursday- Frolic’n Folk Pub – Bras d’Or Trivia – 8 pm:  June 8, Friday – Branch #124, Iona Legion – 6-7pm Supper (Fish) and   Entertainment – 7-9pm for under 19, after 9pm 19 years and over:  June 9, Saturday - 10- am Iona Beach Hike and Clean Up;11-2-Market at the Iona Port; 5-8 -  Cèilidh at The Frolic’n Folk Pub; 8-12– Dance, Iona Legion 19 years &over

As part of our celebration, we plan to do the following:
  • Event is open to the public
  • Media would be welcome
  • Event will include some special activities or engagements for youth and/or young adults
    Under 12,Ages 12-18,College/University Age
    We will be having a beach and area clean-up on Saturday morning - this is an all age family event. On Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 there will be demonstrations and information from Universities and organizations. Schedule being finalized.
  • Event will be highlighting organization's own efforts to reduce use of plastic
