Activity Stations

Have a space for ocean-themed art making. Choose any medium, from paint and chalk to discarded plastic, and invite all ages to participate. Set up a pledge station where visitors can participate in the Better Bag Challenge and receive a gift, take a picture with a mascot, share on social media or throw a handful of sand into the ocean to affirm their promise.

Sponsor a sustainable seafood booth or event and invite local chefs to give demonstrations and food tastings. Check out Chefs Collaborative for a list of “sustainable seafood chefs” in your area and verify their choices. Have a touch tank with ocean creatures or if you’re close to the ocean, host guided tours and sustainable fishing demonstrations.

Invite local musicians to play and get your mascot to wander around and take pictures! Host a dance (to ocean-themed music, of course) or put on a short theater dramatization. Organize a barbecue or a picnic and have a great time!

Games & Contests

Hold a contest for best sea creature costume! If you’re on the beach, hold a contest for best sand castle or sea creature sculpture. A few of your booths can be ocean games, like an ocean awareness wheel of fortune.

Info Booths

Organize a volunteer booth with awareness and action materials. Color-coordinate your volunteers and visitors so that everyone is wearing blue. Provide carbon calculators, such as this one at Berkeley Institute of the Environment, and tips for individual action. Hand out sustainable seafood guides and cards on-site and provide information for online programs such as Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch or Environmental Defense Fund’s Seafood Selector.

Prizes & Raffles

Hand out ocean-themed prizes like free kayaking tours; tickets to the local aquarium, museum, or zoo; ocean conservation t-shirts, hats, or other gear; a sustainable seafood dinner for two; or membership to an ocean conservation organization. Alternatively, raffle off ocean prizes like coupons to local sustainable seafood restaurants; a day at the local aquarium, zoo, or museum; and so on, with proceeds going to a conservation program.
