Adelie penguin

Common penguin species in Antarctica, it was named by a French explorer after his wife. They are highly social creatures full of curiosity. They live in groups called colonies and together, these penguins forage for krill and small fish. Like typical penguins, Adelie penguins also have tuxedo style appearance. However, chicks are born black and grey. Both the parents and the colony help take care of young chicks once born in December.

Current Threats

According to IUCN, Adelie penguins are categorized as Near Threatened species. The cause of this is mostly due to the effects of climate change on their food supply. Loss of sea ice has decreased krill populations, their main source of food.

Make a promise for the penguin

While climate change is a big issue that cannot be tackled by one individual alone, you can still do your part to minimize your carbon footprint. Any little action you do helps mitigate the costs of climate change!

– Ride your bike, walk, or take public transportation rather than taking a car to go places.

– Reduce, reuse and recycle.
