World Oceans Week
The Explorers Club
World Oceans Week

Seeing the fish he loves to catch disappear 15 year old Jack Nixon enlists ocean conservationist Sylvia Earle in what becomes a years long quest to save a dying ocean. Explorers Brian Skerry, Captain Max Kennedy and a band of teenage aquanauts bolster expeditions to the high-seas killing fields of the industrial fleets to the rapidly melting polar ice of the Chukchi Sea. Harvard biologist Dr. E.O. Wilson, deep diving pioneer, Dr. Richard Pyle, and Stanford’s Dr. Barbara Block inform the mission. Apollo 8 astronaut Major General William Anders and activist Bill McKibben provide lessons of how humanity met past challenges. Sobered by a close examination of the daunting scale of the challenge, the teenagers find hope in nature’s ability to heal and the ways a previous generation overcame the global test of World War II.

World Oceans Week 'Turks Head' Knot Wreath Making Workshop

Come re-use fishing line/rope and make a “Turks Head Knot” Wreath with Artist of White Point, Daphne of Knotty Girl in West Dublin, just up the shore from us! The Turks Head Knot was used in the past by fisherman around poles, oars and masts. The knot we will be making will be flattened out which will give it a completely different look. Paired with our workshop will be a glass of Nova Scotia libation – Nova Scotia’s Tidal Bay of course carefully selected to complement our wreath AND lobster-infused munchies, of course! Daphne has been working with re-purposed rope for the past six years. As the fisherman switch out their gear, she will trade them a basket or mat for a load of the used rope, keeping it out of the landfill, and using it to make original pieces for both decorative and practical uses. INCLUDES: All materials to make a Turks Head Knot Wreath to take home glass of Nova Scotia libation – selected by our instructor lobster-infused munchies prepared by Chef Alan and his team. $49 plus tax per person Limited seats.

You are invited to celebrate oceans with Skype in the Classroom!

Oceans are the heart of our planet, and Skype in the Classrooms celebrates them throughout the month of June in honor of World Ocean Day (June 8th). We are inviting educators around the world to explore all the available ocean-related activities and register for one or more to raise students’ awareness about marine conservation.

This June, your class can take virtual field trips to a sea turtle rehab center to learn about turtle conservation, pick the brain of a World Wildlife Fund expert about corals, take a deep dive into the issues facing our oceans with Pulitzer Center journalists and many more. There’s no doubt our guest speakers will inspire your students to love and protect our oceans. On top of that, there is a great variety of collaborative projects so you can connect with other classrooms to work together on finding solutions and taking action to protect our oceans.

Finally, why not add some fun by connecting with another class for a marine-themed Mystery Animal Skype? If you haven’t yet, explore our Oceans OneNote—it has all the resources you need to help you get started with Mystery Animal Skype.

To celebrate the importance of oceans, Skype has just released a collection of ocean-themed emoticons. Open your Skype and start sharing them before, during and after your calls to spread the fun and get your students excited.

The purpose of the workshop  is to discuss how young people can play a role in contributing to ocean and marine conservation and take action to maintain the sustainability of the maritime environment.

Young people are directly affected on these subjects and therefore, actively engaging young people is imperative if we want to successfully implement the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 14. This event proposes to hear from the youth on how they are overcoming the challenges they face on issues pertaining to ocean conservation and preservation and how youth are sustaining and improving the health of our oceans among others.
