Que até ausente soube cercar
A terra inteira com o seu abraço"
Fernando Pessoa in "Mensagem"
The end of the school year Is coming and at our school, Colégio José Álvaro Vidal, and that means it’s time to celebrate. This year our event is going to focus on three areas: the celebration of the 500th year anniversary of Magellan’s journey around the world, globalisation and sustainability. Our activities will bring together Dance, Art, Music and above all, awareness. We want to be plastic free, promoting a healthy live style and paying tribute to ancient tribes who knew and still know that Earth can teach us the most valuable lessons. If we can only respect it enough to listen.
Because the ocean is such an important part of our culture, we also want to celebrate World Oceans Day: we will have an exhibition with different sculptures depicting the many species endangered by the same plastic they are going to be built with (recycled plastic bottles, plastic bags and such recovered by our students: while cleaning the beach; brought from the recycling bins at home/school). This exhibit will be our small contribution to raising awareness to an issue so close to our hearts.
500 years have passed since the first time Magellan first set out on a vast, unknown ocean to explore a brand new world. We don’t have 500 years more to save it. Change is not only urgent, but inevitable.
