The Plett Ocean's Day Challenge

The Fat Fish Restaurant in Plettenberg Bay, in partnership with Nature’s Valley Trust, Renew Able Plett, Keep Plett Clean and Plett Tourism, has spearheaded an initiative – The Plett Ocean’s Day Challenge. The objective is to eliminate three particular single-use plastics in the restaurant industry in the area. The challenge was aimed at every local restaurant, café, and take-away business in Plettenberg Bay to try and achieve three objectives by 8 June 2019 – World Ocean’s Day:

·      The elimination of plastic straws

·      The elimination of individually wrapped after-dinner sweets

·      The elimination of polystyrene take-away containers

The challenge was officially launched on the 10th April with a workshop hosted by The Fat Fish for local business owners. Here, owners were briefed on the challenge and equipped with the tools and resources required to make these changes within their establishments. Over 20 businesses pledged their support that day, with even more joining the cause since then.

An informative handout listing suppliers, pricing and alternative products, produced by the Nature's Valley Trust, was handed out and will be distributed to all those who could not attend.  Rhian Berning from Renew Able Plett, led the presentation with a fascinating insight into the problem of plastic pollution and waste management as a whole and the ways in which business owners can begin to address these challenges.

The initiative aims to put Plettenberg Bay on the map as the No.1 SA destination that is proactive in eliminating single-use plastics and making a tangible difference.  The Plett Ocean’s Day Challenge has the potential to add an entirely new dimension to the town’s profile as one of SA’s Top Eco-Friendly destinations. In addition, the parties responsible are also hoping to turn this into a yearly challenge, focusing on different sectors within the local economy and expanding the objectives of those businesses that have already participated.

The Plett Ocean's Day Challenge will culminate in Beach Clean Up on the 8th June as we celebrate the establishments who pledged and made a plastic free Plett a reality.
