3 Penguin Chicks born at Calgary Zoo

Calgary, AB – Today, the Calgary Zoo is marking World Ocean’s Day with the arrival of three Humboldt penguin chicks. These birds join the 17 other Humboldt penguins in the zoo’s colony:

  • Chick #1 hatched on May 14, 2016 to parents, Estaban (male) and Karina (female)
  • Chick #2 hatched on May 16, 2016 to parents, Horatio (male) and Sophie (female)
  • Chick #3 hatched on May 31, 2016 to parents, Santiago (male) and Juanita (female)

“These spring chicks are a happy addition to our colony and for the Humboldt species,” says Dr. Malu Celli, Curator, Calgary Zoo. “Humboldt penguins are listed as vulnerable according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and are part of the zoo’s Species Survival Plan (SSP).”

All of the penguin chicks are nestled in with their parents in the outdoor burrows at Penguin Plunge. Two of the three have already had their health checks, however the genders of the chicks hasn’t been determined yet.

These three mark the second successful hatching of Humboldt penguin chicks at the Calgary Zoo since Penguin Plunge opened in 2012. The first Humboldt penguin chick, Emilio, hatched on June 27, 2015 to first time parents, Javier and Reina.

To celebrate World Ocean’s Day, the zoo proudly supports Ocean Wise in making sustainable seafood choices, and for the last five years has only offered reusable bags in its gift shops to reduce the use of disposable plastics. Pollution of plastics is a major issue impacting the health of the world's oceans, with roughly eight million tonnes being added to the seas each year.

The zoo challenges all of its visitors to do their part in making sustainable choices and helping to reduce disposable plastics. Join us and our Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) partners as we support The Ocean’s Project and this year’s theme, “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet.”
