Removal of plastics, which form a huge percentage of the marine and coastal debris in the Caribbean only makes sense if it is incorporated into circular economic and industrial processes by using the plastics as raw materials.
This can be done by either conventional plastics sorting and using each sorted plastic as raw material for specific industrial processes or e.g. selective dissolution, developed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which does away with conventional sorting.
In addition research will be done into the use of recycled plastics as raw material for 3D printing.
The idea is to team up with projects like the Ocean Cleanup and other similar projects aimed at plastic removal from the world's oceans.
And a special focus will the avoidance of more marine debris through UNEP and NOAA marine debris prevention progams.
